Montenegro – Iceland 21:22 (10:11)
Iceland caused the first surprise in the first round opener in Santos by beating favorite Montenegro. Big heart and fighting spirit of the Scandinavians and a horrid defense of the east-Europeans meant success for the underdogs.
The first half went on eye level with the vikings in the front and Montenegro leveling. In the second period Iceland built a more comfortable lead by 2-3 goals. For the dying minutes the ´dottirs were still ahead by a single goal. They have played their last attack to the final whistle, so Montenegro didn´t have time for a counter attack and Iceland celebrated big time after this surprising victory in their first ever World Championship match.
