Last years CL-finalist, Győri Audi ETO started at home court against Croatian champion Podravka Koprivnica. Hungarians has almost the same player group than last year, only Katalin Pálinger (finished her career), Vérten Orsolya (FTC) and Ana Gros (Thüringer) has left the team. Newcomers Raphaelle Tervel (Itxako),Viktória Rédei-Soós (Hypo), Dóra Hornyák (Veszprém), Orsolya Herr( Siófok) has CL experience, only Ivett Szepesi (Siófok) on left wing was a debutant in this competition.

Last but not least Győr transfered a new coach, Ambros Martin (Itxako Navarra). He works hard to establish a new type of handball at Győr, totally different from what we’ve could seen in the last years.

First half of the match showed two different faces of hosts: first quarter Győr had the chances, but they could not score from clear situations, sometimes with three players more on the court either. Podravka was in lead by 1-4, 4-5 but afterward hosts managed to equalise at 7-7 (18.min). Than Tervel took over the control in defence and her team took the lead in the match, 9-7. The opponent could not score in the last twelve minutes of the first half, so the result at the break was 11-7.

The second part of the match was totally balanced, but Hungarians never allowed to Podravka coming closer than two goals, they increased the lead by six (22-16, 55.min) and won the match before more than 2000 enthusiastic home fans. Final score: 24-19.

Left winger, Ivett Szepesi analyzed the match:

“It was my every first CL match today, and I was very excited before that. We made a good game in defence, only 19 goals from the opponent, but we have to improve a lot in attack. We managed to win and this is the most important thing. The atmosphere was amazing, our fans gives us a lot of help and confidence. We worked together as a real team, every player has a very important role in this team, we are equals, everyone adds their performance to reach the succes.”

Ambros Martin is satisfied with the performance of his team:

“I am satisfied with this start, we won our first CL-match. We didn’t have a good start, but we managed to come back, play our handball and didn’t get scared when the opponent was in lead either. We had a very good defence in the second part of first half, this is a good starting point. In attack we have to improve a lot, hard work is waiting there. We made a lot of mistakes, it must be reduced. All in all it was a good start, we will be better and better.”
