Møbelringen-Cup in Drammen, victory for Russia

Møbelringen-Cup is a traditional preparation tournament, organized by the Norwegian Handball Federation.

This time the host venue is Drammenhallen and the participant teams are: South-Korea, Russia, Netherlands and the hosts from Norway.

This is the last preparation tournament before the WCh in Serbia, which starts next weekend.

The first match of the day is played between Russia and South-Korea, Russians  being the only team here which is not qualified to the World Championships, they were eliminated by Netherlands.


Russia- South-Koreea 40-39, 36-36 (21-20)

Topscorers: Ekateryna Davydenko and Elene Avdekova (Russia) 6-6goals and Ryu Eun Hee (South Korea) 8 goals

Best players of the match: Ekateryna Davydenko (Russia) and Gwon Han Na (South Korea)


It was obvious after presentation of the teams that South Korea is preparing with their strongest team for the World Championship, meanwhile Russia and Evgeny Trefilov is trying ti build a new team, experiencing with young, talented players, like Anna Vyakhireva, Polina Gorsklova, Ekaterina Shukanova or goalkeeper Evelina Anonshkina.

The match has brought a balanced fight in the first eight minutes, 5-5, but Russia took the lead  at 7-5, then 10-6, 12-9. It was a stronger period of Trefilov’s girls, with a good goalkeeper performance and an outstanding left winger, Elena Avdekova scoring on every position. In 23.minute Asians made a strong comeback, 15-15, but they could not overturn the result, Russians managed to take the lead once again and to win the first half by 21-20.

The second part of the match started with a Korean lead, 23-25, goalkeeper Song had an outstanding performance, making possible for her team taking the lead and the control over the game. Their lead last fifteen minutes, so Russia managed to get the draw and overturn the result to 29-26, 30-27.

In the last ten minutes it was a real race for both teams, with many scoring on both sides, fast attacks and lack of defense. The result has changed in every minutes twice, it was draw or one of teams was in lead by one goal.  Result: 36-36.

Seven meters to decide the match: 4-3 for Russia.

Final result: 40-39
