The DKB Handball-Bundesliga announced minutes ago that the cup quarterfinal Rhein-Neckar Löwen against MT Melsungen, which the lions won in controversial fashion, will be re-played. That’s the result of a protest filed by the Hessians on Wednesday. The league statement says that it’s “positive to see that the referees and delegates admitted their mistakes.”
Melsungen had lost the cup quarterfinal against the Rhein-Neckar Löwen by a score of 21:22 thanks to a last-second penalty shot converted by Uwe Gensheimer. However, the decision by the referees was based on a new rule which does apply only for 1st and 2nd league games, but not for the cup competition. The date of the re-match will be announced shortly.
The REWE Final Four 2016 will be played in Hamburg’s Barclaycard Arena on April 30th/May 1st. Defending champion SG Flensburg-Handewitt, the SC Magdeburg and, for the first time in club history, the Bergischer HC already qualified for the event.
