Timeout Magazine’s staff is formed of people breathing handball for many years. Our journalists and editors Márk Hegedüs, Sascha Staat, Bjørn Kenneth Muggerud, Rodrigo Figliolini and myself, will give our opinions daily, about the matches. The opinions are indepent of each other!
09.45 – Place 7/8: France-Montenegro
Márk: ” My bet is Montenegro, although both teams disappointed in the 1/4finals. Hard to say what will make this difference(as MNE 🙂 Buducnost) might already focus on Champions League, whilst France just played terrible against Russia, but my bet is Montenegro.
Sascha: “: Is this game really of importance? I guess not. So it’s very hard to predict what will actually happen. As both teams are coming of a loss their motivation shouldn’t be too high. France is faster, while Montenegro is more physical. Prediction: Speed beats power by two.
Bjørn: “I had Montenegro as one of the favorites to win the world championship, but one wrong step and the train went to another station. In this match I think they’re back on track and will beat France. Prediction: Montenegro
Ibolya: “This should be a game without pressure, since both teams got their Olympic qualification places already. Only question is which qualification- group they want to be placed in? The team which finishes on the 8th place theoretically can get a much easier way to the Olympics! Match of alibi-handball? Quiet possible! Prediction France.
Rodrigo: “The most difficult of today’s predictions. Two very talented and experienced teams but with 5 or more goal difference losses in the 5-8th place semifinals. Despite this, game goes to over time. Radicevic scores and Montenegro wins by one.
12.15 – Place 5/6: Russia-Denmark
Márk: ” The Scandinavians have the home fan support, Russia’s coach Trefilov always loved it in playing away. His side improved since last year and will surely be a medal candidate in Rio 2016, whilst Denmark had good and bad performance during the actual championship. Honestly I value Russia higher at this championship, so they will disappoint Danish supporters and reach fifth place.
Sascha: : “The Danish team wants to say goodbye to the home crowd in the best possible way after a disappointing loss in the quarterfinals. Russia has nothing to play for, but coach Evgeni Trefilov will ask 100 percent from his players, so a mental letdown shouldn’t be expected. Prediction: Denmark by two.
Bjørn: “Both teams are probably a little disappointed, and I think maybe Denmark will have a chance to beat Russia in this match. It all depends on Trefilov and if Jyske Bank Boxen will be full of Danish supporters. Denmark need this victory more than anyone. Prediction: Denmark
Ibolya: “Last match of Danes in this tournament, but Russia wants a place for Olympics and they will show that the quarterfinal was just a fiasco, so I think they will fight to get the fifth place. Russia will win in my opinion.”
Rodrigo: ” The hosts do not want to finish their campaign with a loss. Losing to Romania was painful enough and players and staff want to give fans reasons to celebrate and believe in the team for the 2016 Olympics and Euro. Tough match but the Danish win by three
14.45 – Bronze medal match: Poland-Romania
Márk: ” Two surprise teams will face each other on the bronze match, I would say the experience is on the Polish side, as they were part of the semis two years ago as well, however this time I tend to say that Romania will gather the bronze medal. They were outstanding against Brazil, Denmark and almost made it against Norway. I assume they will win by 3-5 goals.
Sascha: : ” Poland made it to the semifinals two times in a row, so playing for the bronze medal shouldn’t come as a surprise. For some reason is still does. Romania is back in the business after some difficult years. The team played great against Norway, but Poland seems to be more fit. Prediction: Poland by one.
Bjørn: “Two scandinavian coaches, two teams that both want that bronze medal. Romania got Neagu, Poland got Kim Rasmussen. No doubt the Danish coach of Poland get his girls to go the “extra mile”. If it’s enough in this match I’m not sure. But, I will put my trust in that Poland again will surprise the handball world. Prediction: Poland
Ibolya: ” Poland plays physical tough defense, they had time for more rest than Romania, which plays two games in a row with extratimes. Kim Rasmussen contra Tomas Ryde, I think Poland will take the bronze.”
Rodrigo: ” Bronze medal match has always put teams’ motivation to the test. And in this case, I believe Romanians will play another great game in order to bring home the bronze. And with another great performance by Neagu. Six-goal difference.

17.15 – Gold medal match: Netherlands-Norway
Márk: ” Prediction Holland. For Norway it is not the first time being in a final, so the experience may be on their side, but the Netherlands will continue their dominance and the Oranjes will be an undefeated winner of the tournament. Actually a very interesting duel, as Holland plays with the fast Scandinavian game flow. Back then the girls of Holland were the pupils, now they are the masters of powerful, fast-paced handball. Great improvement !
Bjørn: “Netherlands have achieved more than anyone could expect before this championship. Norway have the official goal to get a medal, and they achieved it again. Now this young team with Nora Mørk in front want to go all the way to the top, and I think they will. Prediction: Norway
Ibolya: ” A new exciting finalist like Netherlands will face the experienced Norway. Two young teams, in good physical shape. The match will be decided by the amount of running, speed and goalkeeper performance. And if it comes to that, by Nora Mørk. I go with Norway
Rodrigo: ” Even tough Netherlands have played an outstanding championship, Norway has the experience and level of playing necessary to win the game. Pretty much like Canada taking on New Zealand in the Rugby World Cup Final. Norway wins by five goals.
