THW Kiel right-back Steffen Weinhold has been named the new captain of the German national team for the upcoming EHF EURO 2016 in Poland. As Uwe Gensheimer is still out with an Achilles injury and will miss the first major tournament of the year, the left-hander was tabbed by coach Dagur Sigurdsson because of his “quality on and off the court”. He called Weinhold the obvious choice.
“Steffen is not only a very good player, but a leader as well. He’s experienced and enjoys a high acceptance within the team,” Sigurdsson added. “It makes me proud, but it’s not the decisive factor. Everybody has to play his part to be successful,” the 29-year old said prior to Tuesday’s friendly against Tunisia, which the German team won by a score of 37:30 (20:18), also thanks to his five goals.
