Germany stuns Denmark, clinches spot in semis

EHF EURO 2016, Poland, Wroclaw

Hala Stulecia

Group 2

Germany – Denmark 25-23 (12-13)

Topscorers: Steffen Fäth (6, Germany) and Mikkel Hansen (7, Denmark)

Germany stunned title favorites Denmark in Wroclaw in a sold-out Centennial Hall and eliminated the Danish team from the competition after an amazing defensive performance in the second half. The team of Dagur Sigurdsson had used a special 4-2 defense system after ten minutes, but weren’t able to control superstar Mikkel Hansen. But after the break the young German side, led by an outstanding Steffen Fäth (6 goals), was able to defend much better and Hansen had a lot of trouble to fine solutions, hardly found any and his teammates weren’t up to thetask. Andreas Wolff won the goaltending matchup against Niklas Landin to make sure of the upset. Germany will now meet Norway in the semifinal in Krakow on Friday.

Best player of the match: Steffen Fäth (Germany)
