EHF EURO 2016, Poland, Wroclaw
Hala Stulecia
Group 2
Spain – Russia 25-23 (11-12)
Topscorers: Valero Rivera (11, Spain) and Timur Dibirov (5, Russia)
The worldclass wing combo of Valero Rivera (11) and Victor Tomas (6) scored 17 of Spain’s 25 goals against Russia to secure their side two points and first place in Group 2 after Denmark had lost to Germany prior to the matchup between the current and former powerhouses. Russia started extremely well, but Spain’s deeper bench and physical strength was just a bit too much to handle for the team of Dimitri Torgovanov, which is now out of the running for a spot in a qualification tournament for the Rio games in August. In the meantime Spain will continue its quest for gold in the semifinal against Croatia tomorrow.
Best player of the match: Valero Rivera (Spain)
