Győr start with full speed

Last Champions League season’s runner-ups Győri Audi ETO KC started the new Champions League season at home against FC Midtjylland. Last season, the Hungarians were not able to beat the Danish team: they lost at home after a five-goal lead and drew in Denmark in the group stage. This time it was a different story from both sides.

Győr showed right in the first minute that they are ready for the show: they started with a strong defense and effective attacking play. The match was only close in the first minutes of the game: after 3-3, Győr made a spectacular 10 minutes going up to 11-3. In this period, Nora Mörk, Nycke Groot and Kari Aalvik Grimsbö were the main names for the home team. FC Midtjylland struggled to stop the fast and spectacular attacks of Győr, while their attack wasn’t effective against the rock solid Győr defense and Grimsbö on fire. In the 24th minute, the difference reached the two digits (15-5) and if anybody had a single piece of doubt after 11-3, the match was already decided. FCM were mostly dangerous from the pivot position, while Győr and the crowd enjoyed the match. The halftime whistle came at 16-7.

The second half didn’t change the game flow: even though FCM managed to come closer to the Hungarian champion in the first minutes, Győr found the rhythm quickly. Heidi Löke scored from every single position, Mörk made an effective and confident CL-debut in green-white and Kari Grimsbö was a class on her own. The second half was more equal than the first one, but Ambros Martín gave some rest to some key players in the second part of the second half. The only question was the exact difference, while the crowd really enjoyed the handball party that the green-white girls made for them. The enthusiastic fans thanked their team with a standing ovation in the last minute of the game, and the celebration started in the Audi Arena: Győr started with a more than confident 31-19 win in the group of death of the Champions League.
