Macedonian superpower ZRK Vardar Skopje played their first away match in this season’s Champions League and right for the first time, they had to travel really far: they faced Russian champions Astrakhanochka in the third round of Europe’s top women’s handball competition. Vardar, still without a permanent choice as a coach for the superstar team, had a homework to solve but it wasn’t easy. Astrakhanochka might have been weakened during the summer but the young Russians are a tough nut to crack at home. This time wasn’t any different: the Russians didn’t give away the two points easily but Vardar was mostly dominant throughout the whole match. Even though Astrakhanochka put up a great fight, the Macedonians led by Andrea Penezic walked away with the two important points and their first away win this season.
