Hungary started the competition with a surprising defeat against the Czech Republic which put Hungary into a difficult position, so Kim Rasmussen had a lot of task to do to shake his team up before the next clash against Denmark. The Danish girls took a hard-fought victory against Montenegro in their first match. The game started slowly, with a lot of mistakes on both sides. Denmark was constantly in front and their first bigger lead came after the 15 minutes mark (6-3). Hungary was running close, the Danish team didn’t manage to take a bigger lead than three goals but the Hungarians were not able to equalize or lead either. Hungary was missing a lot of clear chances and while the Hungarian defense and Éva Kiss weren’t in their good day, Sandra Toft showed an improving performance against the weak Hungarian shots. The first half ended with a 12-10 Danish lead.
The second half was as slow as the first one, with Denmark running in front and Hungary running close behind, but Hungary still didn’t manage to equalize. The number of mistakes was high and Hungary missed a lot of clear chances against Sandra Toft, and even penalties against young Althea Reinhardt. Arriving to the last 15 minutes, the difference grew bigger than before: Denmark was up 19-15. Even though the difference was not that big with 15 minutes left, Hungary didn’t seem to have the power to turn the match around. Denmark always had an answer for every Hungarian try so even not performing at their best, Denmark won the game 23-19. Hungary is in serious trouble before the last round match with Montenegro, but they still have the chance to continue in the Main Round…
