Before the opening of the EHF Champions League, Győri Audi ETO KC was struggling with injuries as in the past two weeks, Zsuzsanna Tomori, Anne Mette Hansen and Jana Knedlikova fell out due to injuries. Despite this, the Hungarian champion wasn’t expected to face big problems againt a renewed FCM in the opening round. Already in the beginning of the match, Győr made sure that they don’t want to give any chance to the Danish team – in the previous seasons, Győr was having some troubles against Midtjylland. Győri Audi ETO KC opened with a 5-0 run and FCM couldn’t take up the rhythm of the game: they made a lot of mistakes, while Győr’s defense was rock solid and Éva Kiss was excellent in the Hungarian goal. The first Danish goal came in the 11th minute but Győr kept going strong while Midtjylland was weak in every element of the game. In the final minutes of the first half, FCM stopped again and the home team opened up the gap to seven goals (15-8).
There were no signs of FCM changing the flow of the game: in the 34th minute, the difference grew to 10 goals for the first time in the match. In the bigger part of the second half, FCM managed to keep the gap under the two digits mark, Győr was making some easy mistakes in attack. The last 10 minutes of the game belonged to Győr again, even though Ambros Martín gave chance to every player on the bench. Young players like Tamara Pál, Sára Afentáler and Csenge Fodor scored goals so every field player had at least one goal on the account. In the last period of the game, one of the main names of the game Éva Kiss was replaced by Kari Aalvik Grimsbö, the Norwegian world class goalkeeper returned to the main stage after a long injury. The last minutes brought a fiesta to the packed Audi Aréna Győr: 5156 people gave a standing ovation to their team. The defending champions started their campaign with a very confident, 27-16 win over Midtjylland.
