Both teams were aware of that their opening game will be the most important f the group for them as it could decide which team will qualify from the third place of the group with France and Norway.
According to this, the match was close in the first half both teams were in lead by one-two goals, but Belarus went to the locker rooms with two goals advantage, 14-12. In the second part of the match, Belarus managed to get a bigger advantage in some periods, but Austrian team always managed to come back with the leadership of Bylik and goalkeeper Bauer. At the end, the experience of the Belarussian players decided the result and even with a fantastic willingness from Austrians, Belarus led by Kulesh and Pukhouski took the victory by one goal advantage, 27-26.
