Everybody was waiting to a final d2regarding the EHF EURO 2020 for women which is about to begin in 11 days. Last week Norway announced their withdrawal as co-host, and Danish Handball Federation announced that they will take over the entire tournament. They propose Kolding as the second host city beside Herning, which would replace Trondheim as a host.
But the Danish government seems to not be sure about to give the green light regarding the organising of an European Championship in time of a global pandemi, which is understandable due to the circumstances.
Sunday, on 22th of November the president of DHF had a meeting with the Danish cultural and sports minister. Everyone expected to have the final answer as a result of this meeting, but there are only more promises that “they are working on the solution.”.
In reality this means that 11 days before the scheduled start of the ECh nobody knows if there will be a championship in Denmark.
My opinion is that Danish government try to push the DHF as organisers to take the final decision about cancellation of the event. The same happened in Norway, the goverment never gave a clear answer about the solution, just sent a hint about their meaning regarding the situation and influenced by that, NHF has cancelled their co-hosting role.
The same taughts came to Per Bertelsen also after today’s meeting :
“I think that the government tries to pull out the waiting time such as we as organizers we got pushed to take the responsibility and to cancel the event by ourselves.”
