Viborg started well the game and they had a small lead in the first ten minutes, 5-4. Than Bietigheim leveled the game and made a 6-0 run, this being the crucial moment of the game, when Bietigheim took a 5-10 lead agaisnt Viborg HK. Kelly Dulfer, Xenia Smits or Veronica Mala were responsible in this periode for the goals, and Melinda Szikora in the German goal showed some impressive saves, taking over the control against the Danish players. Half time: 10-17
The second half seemed to just be a formality, when Biteigheim kept the lead, increasing it at the end and winning big 20-31 against the home team from Viborg.

Bietigheim clinched their first-ever European title, after losing the Women’s EHF Cup final in the 2016/17 season, against Rostov-Don with an aggregate score of 46:53, meanwhile Viborg lost a final in the EHF Cup/EHF League for the first time, spoiling a 100% record set in the Women’s EHF Cup in 1994, 1999 and 2009.
Markus Gaugisch (Bietigheim, coach): “It was a hard job, but I am very happy and really proud of the girls. They did well; stayed focused throughout the game. We played with a lot of heart, a lot of speed and we found good solutions in attack. It was a perfect day for us. “

In the bronze final Herning-Ikast Handbold sealed third place at the Energi Viborg EHF Finals, clinching a hard-fought win against CS Minaur Baia Mare, 29:28, which needed a penalty shootout to decide the winners.
